Pre-Surgery Physiotherapy

Pre-surgery physiotherapy can make all the difference. Most people will think they may need to have physiotherapy after back surgery, however pre-surgery physiotherapy can be crucial to optimise recovery.

What is pre-surgery physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy prior to your surgery is vital for so many reasons. It gives you the opportunity to learn what is going to happen to your body. What to expect during your recovery and how you can make the most of your surgery. Even the slightest increase in exercise will help you.

Our physio’s regularly attend surgeries with Dr Spittaler. They have seen their patients have surgery, therefore giving them insight on how to best prepare you for what’s ahead.  Our goal is to have you less stressed about the surgery and ensure a smooth recovery process.

What's involved?

You will be assessed by a physiotherapist and work on a preparation and recovery plan.  This could include:

🧡 strengthening particular muscles, especially your core
🧡 exercises to do at home prior to surgery
🧡 assessing any specific needs
🧡 education on what to expect after the operation
🧡 answering any questions

At Hunter Allied Care, we place a strong focus on manual therapy and education. This ensures that you regain movement, strength and are stronger than ever. We work with Dr Peter Spittaler, the region’s leading Neurosurgeon, giving you great confidence that you have the very best team on your side.

Pre-Surgery Physiotherapy Studies

Studies show that patients who received pre-surgery physiotherapy significantly improved in all areas. This includes increased walking ability and lower extremity strength in patients with degenerative lumbar spine disorders.  https://bmcmusculoskeletdisord.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12891-019-2850-3
Pre-surgery physiotherapy decreases pain, risk for avoidance behaviour and worsening of psychological well-being and improves quality of life, and physical activity levels prior to surgery.
